Control Siri with just your mind, Project Black Mirror can do just that

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you want to stop talking to Siri and just use your mind to ask it to do things, that possibility may have just become a step closer to reality. A couple of guys decided as a hobby, to tinker around with an iPhone 4S and some ECG (Electrocardiogram) pads. The ECG pads take brain wave patterns and translate them into synthesized speech. The speech is then directed through the 3.5mm headset jack and Siri hears it and acts on the command. The engineers working on “Project Black Mirror” have been able to link 25 brain wave patterns to Siri commands.

Now before we get too excited, you still need to press the home button to initiate a Siri listening mode and the project currently consists of a large test board hooked up to a Macbook pro; it could hardly be called portable. The guys plan on launching a Kickstarter page very soon to attract investment and get the project off the ground.

Take a look at the videos below and let us know what you think. There is a lot of buzz suggesting that the whole setup is a fake. To be honest, it does look too good to be true.

UK voice of Siri didn’t know Apple has used him until he saw the TV commercial

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The provider of the voice for the UK version of Siri has been revealed and what makes the story even more intriguing is the fact that the guy who provided all the sounds didn’t even know it was him until he saw Apple’s commercial. The voice, known as “Daniel”, was provided by former technology journalist Jon Briggs; but it was not provided directly to Apple. The voice over work was originally done six years ago for a company called Scansoft which was later purchased by Nuance, which subsequently licensed it to Apple.

“I did a set of recordings with Scansoft five or six years ago, for text-to-speech services,” says Briggs. “Five thousand sentences over three weeks, spoken in a very particular way and only reading flat and even. Then they go away and take all the phonics apart, because I have to be able to read anything you want, even if I’ve never actually recorded all those words.”

He is certainly not bitter that it is now being used by Apple. He was paid well originally by Scansoft for his work and he loves Apple products. Jon Biggs also provides the voice for many other technology products including satellite navigation units for Garmin, TomTom, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi and Porsche.

Daily Tip: How to change your iPhone or iPad Notification Center alert style

Daily Tip: How to change your iPhone or iPad Notification Center alert style

New to iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and iOS 5 and wondering how to configure Notification Center so you get the alerts you need but not the interruptions you don’t? Luckily, you can choose between 3 different alert styles, from in-your-face popups to subtle banners to none at all. Follow along and we’ll show you how!

iOS 4.3 features: Ping getting pushy with notifications

Popup alerts are the old style iOS notifications of the pass, a big box that leaps out at you and won’t do anything else until you either cancel it or act on it. While old school, these types of alerts still have their place for anything your really don’t want to miss — alarms, calendar appointments, reminders, etc. If you want to be absolutely, positively certain you see something, set notifications to a popup alert.

Banners briefly roll down from the top of the screen. If you don’t want to be bothered by a notification, you simply ignore the banner and go about your business, dismiss the banner by flicking it away, or just wait a couple of seconds and it will roll back up and disappear all on its own. Because they’re subtle, they’re best used for things that are nice-to-known but not incredibly urgent — personal email, social network messages, news alerts, etc. If it’s not critical but you are curious, set notification to banners.

If you set a notification to none, you won’t get an alert at all. No popup, no banner, no nothing. Because you won’t be alerted, this is best for apps that you want to keep around but don’t want to know about unless you specifically open them — games you play infrequently, social apps you seldom visit, apps you only use when traveling, etc. If it’s more interruption than notification, set it to none.

Apple has included deep granular controls in the Notification Center, so configuring it can seem like a daunting task for new users. It’s really simple, however, so just follow these quick steps to help you configure Notification Center in iOS 5:

Open the Settings app from the iPhone home screen.Tap the ‘Notifications’ settings pane. Tap the name of the app you want to configure the alert style for.Choose popup alerts, banner alerts, or no alerts.

In addition to the three notification types listed above, you often also have the option to set a sound and/or vibration alert for a notification. Again, if the notification is really important to you — SMS/MMS/iMessage, Twitter DM or Facebook message, work email, etc. you may want to hear and feel when it comes in.

Otherwise, you can turn sound off and enjoy a slightly more peaceful existence.

Launch SettingsScroll down and tap SoundChoose the app you want to set the Sound for

That’s it, you’re ready to stay informed but not overwhelmed! We’ll be back with more Notification Center tips shortly but in the meantime if you have any advice on keeping alerts under control, let us know in comments!

Daily Tips range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com.

Daily Tip: How to configure the iPhone’s Weather and Stock widgets in Notification Center

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Curious how to setup notifications in iOS 5? With all the various banners and popups, badges and sounds, widgets and lock screen options, it can be a little tricky for first-time users, but worry not — we have you covered! First up, here’s how the new Weather and Stock widgets work!

The Stock widget pulls stock information directly from the native Stocks app in iOS 5. By turning the Stock widget to ‘On’ you’ll see a scrolling ticker displaying your favorite stocks. If you want to change the stocks that are displayed in the Stock widget, just follow these quick steps:

Open the Stocks app from the iPhone home screen, or tap the Stock widget in Notification Center.Tap the ‘i’ information button in the lower right-hand corner.Tap the + button in the upper left-hand corner to add a new stock. You can search for stocks by stock ticker or company name.Tap Done to finish.

Now, the stock that you’ve just added to the Stocks app will show up in the scrolling Stock widget within Notification Center!

Apple also included a weather widget that displays current weather information as well as a full five-day forecast. Just swipe to the left or right to reveal the five-day forecast. The weather widget pulls information from Yahoo! Weather locations stored in the native Weather app in iOS 5. In order to add or change weather locations, follow these steps:

Open the Weather app from the iPhone home screen, or tap the Weather widget in Notification Center.Tap the ‘i’ information button in the lower right-hand corner. From here, you have the option to either use Local Weather (pulled from location services) or add a location manually. For instructions sake, we’ll add a new location. To add a new location, tap the + button in the upper left-hand corner.Search by City, State or ZIP and input your preferred location.

Now the location you’ve manually setup will be displayed in the Weather widget. If you have more than one location in the Weather app, the Weather widget will only display the 1st location. If you have no manual locations set and have the Local Weather feature on, you’ll only see the temperature relative to your geographic location (make sure you have Location Services turned on!)

There you have it, how to configure your Notification Center widgets. We’ll cover the other elements, like Mail and Messages notifications, Lock Screen info, etc. next time. Meanwhile, if you have any favorite Notification Center tips, let us know in comments!

Daily Tips range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. Sprint to SIM lock all new iPhone 4S activations starting today

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

According to a leaked internal Sprint memo, all Sprint iPhone 4S handsets sold starting today will have their SIM card slots locked to Sprint. It has never been fully clear how Sprint was shipping its iPhone 4S models but it now looks like they were originally shipping them with unlocked SIMS.

According to the memo, the SIM locking will be done during the iPhone’s activation process and it will be done invisibly. The customer will not see any notification of it happening.

What does this mean for any new Sprint iPhone 4S users? Well you will lose the ability to use a local SIM card if you travel out of the U.S. You will now have to have a roaming agreement in place with Sprint and pay the much higher call and data charges. One bit of good news, today’s decision does not impact current iPhone 4S Sprint users; we assume that this means their SIM card slots remain unlocked.

iPhone 4S review

Apple’s iPhone 4S is now available factory unlocked in the U.S. from Apple.com. Why it took until November when countries like Canada and the UK got unlocked models at launch, who knows? But if you’ve been waiting to go contract and SIM-lock free, now’s your chance! (Reminder: Only the GSM/AT&T version is available unlocked, not the CDMA/Verizon/Sprint version).

Apple has also launched the iPhone 4S in 13 more countries, namely Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania and South Korea.

If you grabbed a new iPhone 4S today, let us know where and which model you got! And if you need more information to help you decide and get up to speed, check out:

Rumor: Facebook to switch from opt-out to opt-in, better protect personal data

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Facebook might just be close to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that would fundamentally change the way they treat their users, and their users’ personal information.

According to people familiar with the talks, the settlement would require Facebook to obtain users’ consent before making “material retroactive changes” to its privacy policies. That means that Facebook must get consent to share data in a way that is different from how the user originally agreed the data could be used.

Facebook, which makes one of the most popular apps for iPhone and iPad, has been charged with misleading users about how private information was being handled — making it public by default. Under this settlement, Facebook would switch from opt-out to opt-in, letting users decide what they want to share before sharing it, and be subject to audits for 20 years to ensure compliance (much as Google has recently agreed to, and Twitter to a lesser period).

Sony CEO also thinks Apple is working on a TV set

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer — like most of the rest of the world — thinks Apple is working on a television set.

Stringer declined to provide details about what Sony is developing but said “there’s a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set.” He added that he has “no doubt” Apple’s Steve Jobs also was working on changing the traditional TV set.

No surprise there, since Jobs said as much, and Stringer provides nothing in the way of “they’re sourcing components from Sony” to jazz up the story as he’s done previously for things like higher megapixel iPhone cameras.

Speaking of iPhone, some 5 years later, Stringer claims Sony is working hard to make up ground there as well.

Meanwhile, Stringer said other phone makers will catch up to the iPhone, but their devices need to become “seamless.” “The beauty of the iPhone is it’s really well organized,” he said.

And just FYI, Stringer says he’s also not leaving Sony, despite their lackluster performance under his tenure.

Can you turn your various location and notification settings back on and still, you know, have power left to use your iPhone as a phone? Can you raise Siri to speak without her telling you to go plug in somewhere?

As we know iPhone 5 will be launched on 7 October, but there are a lot of rumors about what is happening shows that iPhone is not only 5 will be the only device being launched on this date, according to Reuters that Apple Planing to launch cheaper 8 GBiPhone 4 on the same date too.
Reutersmentions "two people with knowledge of the matter," which say that an iPhone 8 GB 4 is in production:
The flash drive 8 GB iPhone 4 is produced by a Korean company, one of the people said Tuesday, declining to name the company. Apple currently sources the flash drive from Toshiba of Japan and Samsung Electronics of South Korea.
MacRumors finds that the cheapest iPhone 4 may have something to do with those originally leaked components believed to be destined for the iPhone: 5
This news comes at a time, as we have heard more from suppliers and seeing leaked parts appear on the web. In addition to Photo prototype battery, UK iPatchiPods repair shop also had told us that their suppliers had also submitted that there would be two such models: a cheaper iPhone 4, as well as the long-awaited iPhone 5. Thanks to the simultaneous development, there could be some confusion on the parts that appear on the network.

LTE Testing of Apple in iOS 5

Last week we had a report saying that Apple is testing an iPhone with LTE and did not know exactly if he was speaking to iPhone 5 or 6 iPhone and a Macrumors today reported that Apple is teasting LTE ON 5 iOS and hiring more engineers LTE too whats to say that they intend to work in this field.

Since then we have discovered the same plist file LTE in at least the last couple of iOS Developer builds 5. This info.plist file LTE was found only in some builds (GSM, CDMA iPhone 4 iPad 2, but not their counterparts) and was related to internal application "Fieldtest" by Apple. Raises the question if the "internal iOS 5 test build" was nothing special, or if you just speculate the General developer release.

Despite this, not having the news related to LTE just Apple on we heard last week, is still unlikely that Apple will make the leap to LTE so soon with the iPhone 5.

Engadget has also published a photo from a source who claimed that AT&T had 4 G LTE equipment installed in an Apple retail store. AT&T provides Apple with equipment to improve the coverage of telephone in their stores, so the suggestion is that AT&T is boosting LTE signals waiting for some Apple hardware-related.

And the end of last week, Forbes stressedthat Apple had put out a job listing for field test engineers with expertise in LTE.

Field of experimentation in the wireless industry generally means going out ("field") with a new cell and measure the signal strength. Is an integral step that phone makers must take before releasing products to the public.

While Apple often lists among other protocols, LTE trials in any iPhone-concern the question of work, title of this work was written to emphasize the LTE technology specifically.

The reason that LTE is unlikely to arrive, however, in 2012 iPhone is based on the comment of Apple Tim Cook on the LTE chipset this year. Cook said that the first generation LTE chipset forced a lot of design compromises, and Apple wasn't willing to make those compromises. Those compromises likely referred to the needs of the present generation LTE chipset that can cause very short battery life for mobile high performance.

The LTE chipset which is believed to be what Apple plans on working for the iPhone is the upcoming Qualcomm MDM9615. This chipset is announced State in February and is said to start "sampling" in late 2011. A loss 2011-2012 roadmap Qualcomm in July of MDM9615 identified the release of 2012, putting it in Q2 in line for the iPhone, 6.

iPhone 5 components

Any new news on now a new iPhone 5 we connected by a report about the new 5 iPhone battery, we now have more pictures and information about rear facing camera, audio cable, battery and the difference between this one and the iPhone 4.
The components are from tvc Mail discovered and were by MacRumors. They are undoubtedly different parties currently used in the iPhone 4. Are only subtle differences, so you'll have to look closely, but here is facing the camera lens and battery than their counterparts of iPhone 4:

Both batteries are the same shape and size, but the biggest difference is that the connector. Notice on drums iPhone 5 sit horizontally, whereas the battery of iPhone 4 is vertical? There are also some differences in the text. If you look closely, the iPhone battery readings 5 ' 5.3 Whr ', whereas the battery of iPhone's 5.25 Whr 4 law '. The new party also has a number of the 616-0580, compared to the iPhone 4 616-0513 and numbers of the 616-0521
Both camera lenses are very similar — boasting built-in LED flash that can rule out speculation that the iPhone will have a separate flash 5. Although it may still have a dual-LED flash. Just like the battery connector on the lens, the iPhone 5 is different from the one on the lens iPhone 4. Unfortunately there is still no indication of the capabilities of this camera, but recent rumors have suggested that the iPhone will boast a 5 to 8 megapixel camera, an update from iPhone 4 5 megapixel lens.

There's not much to say on the headphone jack audio cable, but flex is different to its peers, that iPhone 4 confirmed MacRumors:
We asked Kyle Wiens of iFixit and just based on the images shown, Wiens said that part numbers were reasonable, and consistent with the marking currently shipping cable.
Unfortunately, pieces of device of fifth-generation Apple doesn't really tell us much about what we can expect. However, I'm sure over the next few weeks we'll see much more components.
